This adapter has a female hotshoe with an integrated miniphone jack (female) sync connector.  The hotshoe is compact.

This setup provides a very convenient way to attach a sync cord, optical slave, or other sync device with the very reliable miniphone plug to a flash unit that does not have a built in sync connector.

This adapter will provide a reliable sync connection for flash units such as the Canon 580EX, 550EX, 430EX, 430EX II, 540EZ, and many other flash units that do not have a sync connector on the flash.

Depending on your camera, these would be the two most commonly used cords to attach the flash to the camera:
